Mary Jo Phillips

Littlefield - Mary Jo Phillips, age 84, passed away on Saturday, May 5, 2012 in Lubbock. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm, Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at the Hammons Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow at Littlefield Memorial Park with Pastor Chris Driver officiating and under the direction of Hammons Funeral Home.

Mary Jo Sims was born on October 14, 1927 in Carter County, Oklahoma, to John Wiley Sims and Maxia Ada (Wilson) Sims. She married Clinton Phillips on September 15, 1948 in Lubbock. The couple was blessed with two children, Kent and Poni Kay. Mary Jo was a devoted wife and a loving mother. She had worked at Ware’s Department Store, the Denim Plant, and helped farm in Amherst. Mary Jo volunteered as a Foster Grandparent and worked in the Companion Program with the elderly. In 2008, she was awarded Foster Grandparent of the Year by the Lubbock State School. Clinton and Mary Jo had been recognized as lifetime members of the Lamb County Sherriff’s Posse and were longtime members of Parkview Baptist Church of Littlefield.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Kent Phillips in 1972, and her husband, Clinton Phillips in May of 1998.

Mary Jo Phillips is survived by her daughter, Poni Kay Hoppe and her husband Ernest Hoppe of Lubbock; her sister Arvilla Tipton of Levelland; her grandchildren, Brent McGaugh of Long Island, NY, Lorri Villarreal of Lubbock, and Amy Purser of Lubbock; nine great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
